My Digital Marketing Work Experience at DP Publicity: A Reflection

July 09, 20253 min read

When I first arrived at the office for my Year 10 work experience, I was uncertain of what to expect. To say I was nervous would be an understatement. Yet, the team made me feel at ease, welcoming me as if I had always been part of their workplace. Their warmth went beyond mere professionalism—It was as if a caring community surrounded me. By the end of the first day, it was clear that this placement would be far from the mundane, tedious work experience I had feared. Despite the short duration of my time there, I quickly felt like a valued member of the team. I owe a special thanks to Mr Robinson, who guided me from the first day to the last.

Unlike many work placements where students are relegated to administrative duties and paperwork, I was assigned productive and helpful tasks. One of the most significant takeaways was gaining insight into how businesses leverage artificial intelligence for growth. I had the opportunity to work directly with AI tools, contributing to projects such as planning a Content Calendar to enhance brand awareness.

Rather than simply shadowing employees, I was encouraged to work independently, knowing that support was available if needed. These tasks were not merely busywork and free labour for the company; they were real-world, purposeful, and were chosen so I too could benefit and learn.

Beyond technical skills, I also became familiar with industry terminology, ranging from formal business concepts like “overhead costs” and "customer pain points" to workplace colloquialisms such as “eggsucky” (meaning something painfully obvious). This, alongside other experiences, provided me with exposure to an authentic behind-the-scenes perspective on business operations.

What truly distinguished this experience, however, was the team’s investment in my long-term development. They treated me not as free labor but as a young person with potential. I received invaluable career advice, including guidance on optimizing my LinkedIn profile for future opportunities.

The daily commute from Bolton—an hour and a half each way—was challenging, but the team’s consideration made it worthwhile. They were exceptionally accommodating, even assuring me that I could adjust my schedule if necessary. However, the quality of the experience was such that I was eager to attend every day.

What is the traffic like. I’ve heard they have shut the M62. Honestly, don’t feel like you have to come in today. I can give you some work on zoom and then see you in person tomorrow. Let me know how you are getting on, but if you’re pushing on through, don’t worry about being late. Just get here when you can.

This placement was far more than a school requirement—it was a glimpse into the real, working world. I had the chance to draft promotional banners, write articles, and observe how businesses automate email campaigns for large audiences. All this deepened my understanding of digital marketing beyond textbooks and theories.

Without hesitation, I would recommend DP Publicity to anyone seeking work experience or even full-time employment. The combination of a welcoming atmosphere, hands-on learning, and a sincere commitment to fostering growth is deeply valuable. This experience has left me genuinely enthusiastic about my future career prospects. I extend my earnest gratitude to Mr. Robinson and the entire team for providing such a positive and enriching experience. If this is telling of what the professional world can offer, I look forward to what lies ahead.
